Low back pain:

Almost everyone will experience low back pain at some point in their lives. This low back pain can vary from mild to severe. It can be short-lived or long-lasting. However it happens, low back pain can make many everyday activities difficult to do. If you have low back pain, you are not alone. Nearly everyone at some point has low back pain that interferes with work, routine daily activities, or recreation.

 

Low back pain or lumbago is a common musculoskeletal disorder affecting 80% of people at some point in their lives.
Low back pain may be classified by the duration of symptoms as acute (less than 4 weeks), sub acute (4–12 weeks),

chronic (more than 12 weeks).Back pain is different from one person to the next. The pain can have a slow onset or come on suddenly. The pain may be intermittent or constant.

 

Cause:

The majority of low back pain stems from benign musculoskeletal problems, and are referred to as non specific low back

pain; this type may be due to muscle or soft tissues sprain or strain, particularly in instances where pain arose

suddenly during physical loading of the back, with the pain lateral to the spine. Over 99% of back pain instances fall

within this category. The full differential diagnosis includes many other less common conditions.

 

Low back pain may reflect nerve or muscle irritation or bone lesions. Most low back pain follows injury or trauma to the back, but pain may also be caused by degenerative conditions such as arthritis or disc disease, osteoporosis or other bone diseases, viral infections, irritation to joints and discs, or congenital abnormalities in the spine. Obesity, smoking, weight gain during pregnancy, stress, poor physical condition, and poor sleeping position also may contribute to low back pain.

Medicine can decrease low back pain and reduce muscle spasms in some people. But medicine alone is not an effective treatment for low back pain. It should be used along with other treatments, such as exercise and physical therapy. Back pain is extremely common - about four in five people are affected at some point in their lifetime. Anyone can get back pain at any age, but it's most common in people between the ages of 35 and 55, or over.

If you have low back pain, you may have tension, soreness or stiffness in your lower back area. This pain is often referred to as 'non-specific' back pain and usually improves on its own within a few days.
