Ayurvedic  or ayurveda medicine is a system of traditional medicine native toIndia and a form of alternative medicine. In Sanskrit, words yus, meaning "longevity", and veda, meaning "knowledge" or "science".They are among the foundational works of Ayurvedic. Over the following centuries,Ayurvedic practitioners developed a number of medicinal preparations and surgical procedures for the treatment of various ailments. Current practices derived from Ayurvedicmedicine are regarded as part of complementary and alternative medicine.

Ayurvedic, the oldest system of medicine in the world, traces its roots to the Vedic period in ancient India. The Vedas contain practical and scientific information on various subjects beneficial to the humanity like health, philosophy, engineering, astrology etc.

One view of the early history of Ayurvedic asserts that around 1500 BC,Ayurvedic fundamental and applied principles got organized and enunciated. In this historical construction,Ayurvedic traces its origins to the Vedas, Atharvaveda in particular, and is connected to Hindu religion. Atharvaveda contains 114 hymns or formulations for the treatment of diseases.Ayurvedicoriginated in and developed from these hymns. In this sense,Ayurvedicis considered by some to have divine origin. Indian medicine has a long history, and is one of the oldest organised systems of medicine.Ayurvedic is a complete or holistic system that integrates the mind, body and spirit.

After India gained its independence in 1947,Ayurvedic gained ground and new schools began to be established. Although Ayurvedic remains a secondary system of health care in India, the trend toward complementary care is emerging, and Western and Ayurvedic physicians often work side by side. The practical tenets of Ayurvedic are divided into eight sections or branches. These eight sections are called "Astanga Ayurveda".
